Welcome to Light & Salt Soap Company. My name is Julia and I am the owner and creator here. Here at Light & Salt we strive to create products that not only look good, but are also good for you. What started out as a hobby years ago, has now become a passion and a business. All of our products are handmade in small batches using high quality natural ingredients. We do not use any artificial fragrances or colourants in our products and never will!

Now when I say natural, I mean as natural as is possible while creating a quality product. I make soaps using the traditional ‘cold process’ method. Many people will ask if there is lye (sodium hydroxide) in the soap since lye is a chemical.  Yes, lye is a chemical, however.. “no lye, no soap – no lie!” (a little soap humour). Lye is used to make the soap. It is actually impossible to make soap without lye, however it is not in the final product. Once lye is mixed with the butters and oils, a chemical reaction takes place called ‘saponification’ which is the mixture turning into soap and both oils and lye are consumed to create it. Again, there is no remaining lye in the soap you purchase, which is why it is not listed as an ingredient.

I am passionate about creating healthier alternatives to products that we use every day. Is it cheaper to buy soap from a big box store? Absolutely, but what are you putting on your skin? Glycerin, a natural humectant is a naturally occurring by-product of soap, but mass produced soaps usually have it removed to use in other products which is why you tend to feel dry and tight after using them. They may be cleansing, but they are also stripping your skin of its natural oils.

All soaps are made in small batches to ensure quality control and are then cured for 4-6 weeks before being sold. The ingredients used have all been specifically chosen because of their skin-loving and/or therapeutic properties. You will notice that no two bars of natural soap are the same, which is part of the beauty of handmade!
